Hiretrack: Restore to a different server

1. Stop the service on the old server (unless it’s dead, in which case no need.)
2. Install Navigator server on your new server.
3. Create a directory with the restored files and make sure Navigator_SQL has full access
4. Create an alias, like testrestore, or whatever you want to call it.
5. Stop the Navigator service and run NLS Pack if necessary.
6. Start the service and your database is fully restored and running.

1.    On the server create a new alias pointing to the directory that the files are being copied to. The alias means a name for a database – so you dont actually create a new database – you point to the one that is being copied over. To be honest it doesnt matter what the alias is called. It may be easiest to install the test server – give it a quick test using the database that is installed as part of the setup process then create the alias for the backup to go in then stop its service.
2.    Yes the navigator nexus service is the one to stop.
you have the correct idea on the steps – but you need to restore the data to the test server before activating it as you cant restore to a directory the server has in its aliases when it is active.

Server procedure summary

1. Stop the service on our live server
2. Activate the software on the test server
3. Run the restore and test it.
4. If satisfactory, stop the service on the test server
5. Start the live server again.

You can install the full version on a backup machine. but as soon as you have done so stop the service so that our system doesn’t think it’s an illegal copy. Create an alias on it.The service musn’t be running on this machine as otherwise the backup from the primary machine won’t be allowed to write to the directory.
Then use the backup script running as a scheduled event say running every hour to make a copy of the alias. If you map the network drive of the backup machine you could configure the backup script to put the copy directly into the vmi alias directory on that machine.
So if your main server dies, you simply start the service on the second machine, It advertises itself on the network so your clients should be able to find it and the data will be there ready and waiting.
The only other thing you would need to do is have a separate utility like robocopy running as a scheduled event that copies the documents folder from primary machine to the backup machine.
If the two machines are using the same operating system then you should not need to use the nls_pack utility to update the tables.
For a quick test with your VM, just stop the service on the main machine and on the W7/ VM. Copy the contents of the alias on the primary machine into the alias on the W7 VM and then restart both services. You may have to run NLS_pack.exe pointing at the alias directory if the two operating systems are wildly different – but in reality the test machine should just offer up the alias with the data in it as soon as the service starts.

TO BACK UP HIRETRACK NX DATABASES:
The HireTrack NX “backup script” uses snapshot transaction technology to ensure that:
i) the backup can run while users are still working in HireTrack NX.
ii), when the backup executes full database integrity is maintained. This surpasses what you can achieve with regular backup technology.
However, the “backup script” will not include files that are not HireTrack NX tables, such as external documents (stored in the [Alias path]\Documents folder), so a complete backup regime should be:
1.    Use the HireTrack NX “backup script” to backup an Alias somewhere else on the same machine – this backup is a usable database which requires nothing special to restore it. Lets call one of the destinations [Destination].
2.    Use something like RoboCopy to mirror the [Alias Path]\Documents folder to [Destination]\Documents.
3.    Use a regular backup tool to backup [Destination] to a secure off site repository.
4.    Repeat for any additional Database Aliases
TO RESTORE HIRETRACK NX DATABASES:
1.    Use your backup tool to restore the backed up [Destination] files.
2.    Set the access rights of this folder such that (by default) Navigator_SQL has full access.
3.    Use the NLS_Pack.exe tool to update the restored tables.
4.    Within the NX Server web interface, create an Alias pointing to the restored folder and Save this setting.
5.    Repeat for any additional Database Aliases

The live backup script and it DOES in fact keep all the indexes in tact – its only the backup we do before an SQL update that doesn’t (for speed and size reasons). So what you end up with is just a folder of *.nx1 files that are ready to go insofar as you would move them to where ever you want your restored data to be and then point a database alias at this folder on your new NX server. The only step that you probably would have to perform in between (before you pointed an alias at this folder) is to run the NLS utility against these files to ensure the file locales are set correctly for the new machine (see http://www.hiretracknx.com/manuals/server/online/moving_your_data_nls.htm)
